I have a ton of faith in BioWare, since they have produced high quality titles over and over. I'm also kind of sick of seeing people blame Obsidian for KotOR2's failure (because Obsidian also has made high quality titles)...really, the two companies I don't have faith in are LucasArts and EA. LucasArts seems solely interested in finding the ultimate 'cash cow' videogame, with little regard to their community of fans as a whole. EA, on the otherhand, is just a publisher that is too big for its own good, and has a very bad habit of taking successful franchises, adding their own touch to them and totally ruining it.
TOR will have spectacular graphics, particularly for the 3D Mattepaints used in preview videos, since I've seen some of Jaime Jasso's work for the project. The actual game graphics may be a little 'cartoony', but will certainly meet or exceed gamer expections.
The real area of concern is the plotline. Naturally, the developers will be talking about their dynamic plot system and all that jazz (which we've heard before, if Freelancer rings a bell to any of you). I can't really take any developer at their word when it comes to how awesome something will be. And previews, however interesting they may be, might not be truly indicative of the game. If I had to guess, BioWare will take the time to create dynamic characters just like those in KotOR1 and 2. However, the plot-driven MMO concept will either wear thin very quickly, require an inordinate amount of time to keep up with, or require an endless series of expansions (see below).
Additionally, there is the problem that the Star Wars community, particularly the Star Wars MMO community, is rather immature and obnoxious. To paraphrase a quote by BioWare's developers, the game is designed around "not everyone wants to be a Jedi." The inherent problem there is that, really, everyone does want to be a Jedi (come on, did SWG miraculously go down the tubes because of something besides Jedi and SOE?) Aside from the stereotypical 'I can haz J3d1??? LAWL' type player, one of the reasons most people liked KotOR is that the atmosphere of the game was mature, clever and witty, while still maintaining a very professional feel. The humor wasn't Jar-Jar or C-3PO & R2-D2 type humor, and each character at least kept the aura that what you were doing was truly something to save the galaxy.
Of course, there is the financial situation involved as well. $50 for the game is tolerable, I was more than willing to shell that out for KotOR and KotOR2. But $50 plus $12 per month x 12 months is $194 for the first year of gameplay. And we all know that after that first year, LucasArts will bury us in a zillion awesome "updates", each which is released as a new expansion pack, because EPs are much cheaper to create once the game itself exists.
I think most gamers are getting tired of seeing everything become an MMO. If they wanted to make an MMO portion to KotOR, so be it, but I think they owe it to the fans to at least provide a single player aspect with a coherent plotline. Some people have the luxury of sitting in their basement playing a game all day, but for those of us with school, careers, families, or lives outside gaming, we deserve better.
We'll see how it turns out, but I'm not holding my breath. The cinematics look sweet, but we all knew that already.
