EA are looking to get 2 million subscribers for SW:TOR

Share

IndustryGamers reports that, according to one analyst, EA are looking to get 2 million subscribers when Star Wars: The Old Republic releases next year:
Between major successes like Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2, BioWare has quickly become one of the most important studios throughout all of Electronic Arts since the publisher acquired the RPG specialists. EA has already indicated that the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO is the "largest ever development project, period, in the history of the company,” and it's quite clear that expectations for this title are huge.

Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia recently came away from a meeting with EA and reported that although "earnings are somewhat depressed due to ongoing expenses of the Star Wars MMO, management has high hopes for this and believes 2M+ subs is possible." He added that a little over 1 million subscribers is needed to reach the break-even point, but the ultimate goal is to get several million subscribers.

They might pull this off, but only if the designers had the courage to look at each single interactivity aspect of wow, and made clear improvements to it - including - auction house, quest chains, emergent and contextual quests, multiple advancement trajectories, 'diffuse' class lines, thorough degrinding, mail system, more players per server, significant lag management, far more robust PVP, not that same old crap where a button does a cardboard trick, etc. etc. etc.

I will believe it when I see it. Corporate suits are cowardly as hell and don't know the word 'experimental' as a rule. And we have seen EA to be the worst in this regard. If this project sucks and has the greasy paws of 'senile lucas' all over it I'll do my best to contribute to have it die with a few dozen negative posts and bloggings.

It doesn't matter how many subscriptions you have from the gate but how many people you still have playing 4 months later. AoC anyone? Warhammer Online? They both had huge sales and within weeks/months, lost subs like crazy. Once the novelty of a new MMO wears off, the game better have some substance, or gamers will go back to old favourites.

2 million subs? I doubt it very much. 1 - 1.5 million boxes sold? I could see that. If, one year from release, they have 1 million subs, they should be happy. Expecting more is like looking forward to falling on your face and breaking teeth.
