Fan Film: Hughes The Force Trailer

The world of fan-made films is a world scorched by the explosive crapness of some of the work released by people who think owning a camera and the ability to make your mother laugh qualifies you as the next George Lucas. So, when something actually good-looking arrives, it deserves a marching-band led parade of honour.

Hughes The Force is one such film, which quite brilliantly looks to meld the universes of Star Wars and John Hughes (a match made in Heaven, I think you'd have to agree). And we now have a trailer for it:

Looks like a gem. Here's the synopsis, from the film's official site:

Simon and Henry, two teens tortured by jocks and rejected by girls, are invited to the epic end of the year high school party, but there's a catch. In order to get in, they need to bring just one hot girl. Unable to attract any female attention, they decide to take matters into their own hands and create the perfect woman from Simon's prized Slave Leia action figure. Armed with a fully operational lightsaber and blaster, the two set out with their self-appointed mentor to do what they have never done before: fit in. On their journey, they encounter stormtroopers, aliens, and even a Dark Lord of the Sith in the most unlikely of places. But even with the Force as their ally, some things are not meant to be...

The team behind Hughes the Force are aiming to enter the film in the 2011 Star Wars fan film challenge, and can already boast the prize of Editor's Pick for Best Pitch in the Atomfilm.com Operation Olivia contest. And from what I've seen so far, I'd say this one's definitely going to be one of the good ones.

Visit the film's official site for Stills, Production Info and all the Latest News from the team.

Horrifyingly Realistic Bust Of Grand Moff Tarkin

I have terrible, haunting memories of when I was younger and watched both Poltergeist and Child's Play within the space of about a week and then believed that all of my toys, and especially my sister's dolls were going to murder me in particularly graphic, innovative manner.

The reason I mention that is because from that day on, I vowed never to have anything creepily life-like in my home, because everyone knows that they are the most likely to come alive and slay you as you sleep. The only exceptions to the rule are busts, usually of comic book and movie characters (I have spent way too much money on this little habit), which I love like children and for some reason do not fear.

But, for the first time, thanks to some stand-out work from sculpture-artist Jordu Schell, (which I discovered thanks to the legends over at Geeks of Doom) I find myself wondering whether a bust is cool enough to outweigh its frankly horrifying realism. And while I debate, here's what all the fuss is about...

Holy God. As if you needed telling, that's British acting legend Peter Cushing as Star Wars villain Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin. Look how he peers into your soul. It's enough to bring about the iciest of cold sweats in anyone.

Schell is also something of a movie veteran, having worked in the Art Department on such make-up-heavy projects as 300, Men in Black, Galaxy Quest, Dawn of the Dead, Hellboy, Cloverfield, Avatar, Predators, Battle: Los Angeles, and Cowboys & Aliens. And by God, the man has talent.

Head over to his website for more of his incredible work.

Species of Starwars - Bith

Bith were a highly advanced craniopod species native to the planet Clak'dor VII. They had pale skin, large heads and eyes, and long fingers. Bith had acute senses of smell, high manual dexterity, and could sense the tonal qualities of sound as well as other races sensed colors. They could also see microscopic details of nearby objects, but were extremely nearsighted as a result. Bith never slept unless utterly exhausted.

Bith were one of the galaxy's most ancient races, with a history going back millions of years. Their society was highly regimented, with everything from mate selection to political leadership controlled by sophisticated computer programs. Bith were also unable to reproduce naturally, instead relying on artificial conception and gestation.

Mates brought genetic material to a Computer Mating Service for analysis against prospective mates. Bith children were created from genetic material from two parents, which was combined, fertilized, and incubated for a year. The Bith's internal systems were different than most humanoids, as the Bith had only one lung. Bith also lacked a proper nose, instead having olfactory organs hidden in the flaps of their cheeks.

Clak'dor VII's main exports were the products of the Bith intellect. Many Bith worked as engineers or data analysts. Their hearing also made Bith such as Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes (the house band in the Mos Eisley Cantina circa 0 BBY) excellent musicians.

Know your lore: Dustil Onasi

Dustil Onasi was a member of the Onasi family, and son of the war veteran Carth Onasi who served the Galactic Republic Navy during the Mandalorian Wars, Jedi Civil War and aftermath at the Battle of Telos IV.

Dustil was born on Telos IV and raised mostly by his mother due to his father being of the soldiery. During the bombardment and destruction of Telos IV's surface during the Jedi Civil War, his mother was killed and Dustil was assumed dead, but in fact he survived and gained dislike for the Galactic Republic and his father for their inability to save Telos IV. He, as a Force-sensitive, trained in the Dreshdae colony of Korriban at the Sith Academy to become a Dark Jedi. However, he was discovered by his father and Revan and convinced to return to the light. He also convinced several of his friends to turn from the dark side, and promised to meet again with his father on Telos. It is unknown if this reunion ever occured, or what became of Dustil in the aftermath of Jedi Civil War.

  • Dustil (as well as the whole secondary quest) appears only if the player visits a spaceport with Carth where they are informed about him, AFTER Carth has told the player about his family.
  • While the above is the canonical light side version, it is possible for the player to kill Dustil if the player is following the Dark Side path.
  • A popular new fan pairing that has arisen in the recent years of KOTOR's release is Dustil being paired with Mission Vao.
  • In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, Dustil was supposed to make an appearance in the tomb on Korriban, where he would be somewhat insane and attack the Jedi Exile. Unfortunately, the voice was never done. When you go to the chamber with the Hssisses, however, the body that is there is clearly Dustil's but is labeled Jedi Corpse and contains a datpad belonging to a certain Bheeda.

Biography

Early Life
Dustil was born on Telos IV and raised mostly by his mother due to his father's constant absence as a soldier in the Republic Navy. During the bombardment and destruction of Telos IV's surface during the Jedi Civil War, Dustil's mother was killed and he was assumed dead. In reality he had survived, but developed a strong dislike for both the Galactic Republic and his father for their inability to save Telos IV.

Sith Training
Some time later, a friend of Dustil's named Selene convinced him to join the Sith Academy on Korriban. He quickly became one of the more promising students there. He was strong with the Force and proficient in combat, and soon attracted the watchful eye of the academy's headmaster, Uthar Wynn.

While training, Dustil developed a relationship with Selene, who was also a student at the academy. This distressed Master Uthar, who felt that such an emotional entanglement would hinder his best student's progress. The conniving Sith Master secretly had the young woman murdered and then lied to Dustil about the occurrence.

Redemption
During the Jedi Civil War Dustil was discovered by his father and Revan as he was training at the Sith Academy. Carth, hurt by the choices Dustil had made, tried to talk with him and convince him to turn away from the Sith. Dustil refused, still blaming his father for his mother's death, and believing the Sith to now be his true, caring family.

When Revan and Carth found a journal of Master Uthar's detailing the events of the treachery against Dustil, they decided to show it to the young man as proof that the Sith were truly evil. With this newfound knowledge, an emotionally distraught Dustil was convinced to forsake the Sith and their teachings.

Dustil promised to eventually meet his father on Telos IV, where they could begin to repair their relationship. But instead of immediately leaving the academy, he decided to remain on Korriban to try and help as many of his friends as possible.

It is unknown if the reunion between father and son ever occurred, or what became of Dustil in the aftermath of the Jedi Civil War.

Will SWTOR players be separated by language?

Language is important in an MMO where players depend on communication with others to make the game fun and enjoyable. But with a large game like SWTOR that gathers a varied fan base of multi-cultural fans, it’s no surprise that language would become an issue.

Some are calling SWTOR racist and to say the issue is of importance would be an understatement. The available languages and in what manner they will be available is important to gamers, particularly those of the English, French and German languages.

Players are very concerned that they will have to be grouped together in one large multi-language server where everyone speaks in their native tongue. Stephen Reid explains that there are not concrete plans as of yet on how the servers will be set up but like most other MMOs there will be servers dedicated to players who speak one common language.

“While we can't discuss this in much detail - yet - it's safe to assume there will be servers that will be designated as being 'officially' French, German and so on.”

Reid goes on to add,

“That said, in this day and age it's always possible that foreign language speakers will appear on a predominantly English-speaking server, for any number of reasons. If that happens, you should be tolerant and respectful of them. We're all gamers, just trying to game.”

Most of the servers will likely be English-speaking but that doesn’t mean that players who speak other languages won’t be allowed to play there. What it does mean is that if you want to play on a server with mostly people who speak your language, you’ll have to take some steps to ensure you get on the right server. If you don’t care, then you won’t have to worry too much about what server you end up on.

Still other gamers think that the separation is a form of racism and indicates that players speaking different languages cannot coincide together. It’s a slippery slope when it comes to matters such as this but it seems the staff are taking it seriously and listening to the gamers’ concerns.

It looks to me like the development team of SWTOR will do their best to make the game as user-friendly as possible for people of all backgrounds. What do you think? Do you prefer multi-lingual servers or language separation between servers?

Chinese Prisoners Forced to Farm Gold in Online Games

"There were 300 prisoners forced to play games. We worked 12-hour shifts in the camp. I heard them say they could earn 5,000-6,000rmb [£470-570] a day. We didn't see any of the money. The computers were never turned off." Says a prisoner at the Jixi labor camp, Liu Dali who shares his story of being imprisoned and forced to work hard labor by day and farm for in-game currency by night.

Chinese gold farmers have become something of a joke in online gaming. Anyone who spends time collecting in-game currency is commonly referred to as a “gold farmer”. While many gamers have mixed feelings about the subject, most will admit they don’t actually know where the gold comes from.

Most gamers don’t understand how many of these companies get their gold and make a profit. Some gold-selling companies have been known to steal or hack accounts and use these characters to farm while also stripping them of any currency they have or that they can obtain from guild banks.

But an even more disturbing thought is the fact that the gold you are buying may have come from an inmate in a Chinese prison. When we think of prison, we don’t usually think of computers and video games but according to prisoners who have been there, some Chinese prisons are finding a new way to earn money off of their inmates.

Prisoners are forced to spend unreasonable hours farming for in-game currency of some of the most popular online games. Workers that don’t meet their quota for the day are beaten brutally and they are meant to work until they can barely see anymore. That’s far from fun and games.

Not all companies that sell in-game currency employ these types of services but with such a large market it’s hard to tell exactly where the mass amount of the currency is coming from. Whether it’s from a prisoner who’s being mistreated or some average citizen who quit their job to work at home, gamers still buy currency. As long as there is a market for these type of goods, people will continue to be exploited to make a profit from it. If you do buy gold, next time you may want to ask where the gold is coming from before soliciting a particular company.

There was a BBC report about Chinese gold farmer a few years back, but they didn't mention forced prison labour. Still relevant to check out:

We don't have delusions that SWTOR won't have a secondary market, nor do we take stands on this matter. But please think twice before you spend money on in game items. Please make demands to your future supplier if you can't play them game as the rest of us.

Synopsis Revealed For Upcoming Revan Novel

While we can’t even see a cover yet, Random House has released the synopsis for the upcoming Revan novel.

This is exciting news for fans of Revan, Drew Karpyshyn and Star Wars The old republic. Drew is the New York Times bestselling author of Star Wars: Darth Bane: Path of Destruction, Star Wars: Darth Bane: Rule of Two, and Star Wars: Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil, as well as several other science fiction and fantasy novels. He also wrote Mass Effect: Revelation and Mass Effect: Ascension.

The new book synopsis reads:
There’s something out there:a juggernaut of evil bearing down to crush the Republic—unless one lone Jedi, shunned and reviled, can stop it.
Revan: hero, traitor, conqueror, villain, savior. A Jedi who left Coruscant to defeat Mandalorians—and returned a disciple of the dark side, bent on destroying the Republic. The Jedi Council gave Revan his life back, but the price of redemption was high. His memories have been erased. All that’s left are nightmares—and deep, abiding fear.

What exactly happened beyond the Outer Rim? Revan can’t quite remember, yet can’t entirely forget. Somehow he stumbled across a terrible secret that threatens the very existence of the Republic. With no idea what it is, or how to stop it, Revan may very well fail, for he’s never faced a more powerful and diabolic enemy. But only death can stop him from trying.

The book is scheduled to go on sale November 15, 2011 for retail of $27.00. It has me intrigued, what about you?

How Stuff Works: Sith fighter

The Sith fighter was a tentatively named starfighter of ambiguous origin that formed the bulk of Darth Revan and Darth Malak's space forces during the Jedi Civil War.

Little has been gleaned about these fighters specifications. They appeared to carry a prototype twin ion drive system, seen only in this design. Its design appears to be a hybrid of various technologies, matching no specific world. Its specifications gave the fighter maneuverability to the point of instability, meaning much of the central chassis was given to managing the reactor core for optimal performance.

When docked, not in use, or traveling through hyperspace, the Sith fighter had the ability to fold its wings and power down its weapon systems. In combat, these were unfolded, and the laser cannons brought to bear, a concept later seen in the S-foils. This allowed it a broad attack arc, while its small profile made it difficult to target.

The Sith fighter's design was intended to recall that of the TIE starfighters of the Galactic Civil War. Perhaps coincidentally, they also greatly resemble dark side starfighters seen in a flashback in Tales of the Jedi: Knights of the Old Republic.

History
The Sith fighter first appeared as Malak and Revan returned to the Republic as conquerors after the Mandalorian Wars. While many of their capital ships were turncoat Republic vessels, the majority of their forces were made of these curious fighters. Produced by the Star Forge, they could be easily stored in cargo bays, such that even a single mothership could deliver swarms of them into battle. Further, they were quick to scramble, making them a deadly first strike.

Galactic Noms!

I love food. I love Star Wars. Couldn't they somehow mesh both of those worlds together in one awesome, and slightly copyright-infringing moment of genius?

Well, yes, they already have.

The awesome picture below begs two questions: why is there not a whole fleet of these vans operating worldwide, and what went so drastically wrong in Han Solo's life that he now finds himself flipping grilled cheese for a living?

Or is this some sort of variant origin story in which the erstwhile Galactic chancer rose to being one of the most respected pilots in the known universe after casting off his working-class background. Sort of like Rocky, only with more cheese and more full-frontal wookie action...

TOR Guild Statistics- Which Faction Will Rule?

As guilds gear up and get ready for the anticipated release of SWTOR, we notice some interesting statistics. While it’s all early info, there are some patterns taking place in the guild stats. “mlgoss” posted these observations which have us thinking, which faction will rule TOR?

Here are some stats of guilds will 100+ members (based on those registered thus far):
  • PvP guilds - 12 Empire, 4 Republic
  • PvE guilds - 4 Empire, 13 Republic
  • RP guilds - 4 Empire, 4 Republic
And here are the member counts:
  • 110,887 members total
  • 49,468 Republic members
  • 61,419 Empire members
So it looks like the Empire is dominating right now. While all of the numbers are very preliminary and do not account for many people who have not signed up/joined a guild yet, they can serve to give us an idea of what the game makeup might be like.

If you’re a guild leader, this could be useful information to help you choose where your guild will play. But in no way should they be used to 100% define where you will play or what faction you will play.
As a long-time MMORPGer myself, I follow the try-it-for-yourself philosophy and we cannot do that until the game is released. In the meantime, my guild and I have a pretty good guesstimate of where and what we want to play but we’re keeping all options open until the game is here.

*Keep in mind though that these numbers are based on committed gamers that follow the game’s development before it’s released and that have already joined a guild or are part of a multi-gaming guild (like me).*

Georg talks about Smugglers and Cover

Are you hanging desperately onto every new word about SWTOR and stalking the forums for yellow posts to give you a little more insight into how rocking the game’s gonna be? Ok, maybe you’re not quite as pathetic as me but the good news is, I get to pass the interesting details on to you so you can go on and... I don’t know… have a life!

Speaking of interesting details, Georg “Observer” Zoeller, Principal Lead Combat Designer for SWTOR posted recently about Smugglers and cover on the forums.

According to Georg, “All Smugglers have access to cover, but depending on Advanced Class and Skill set, cover plays a less or more important role for your gameplay.”
He goes on to explain the differences with a Gunslinger and a Scoundrel. For example,
“A Gunslinger with lots of points in the Sniper tree will have made cover a core part of their combat routine, with abilities like 'Entrench' and 'Cover Pulse' improving the utility and protection their cover ability offers, while utilizing several 'cover only' abilities for heavy frontloaded damage.”

These skills have interesting dynamics in them, which shows the development team really put proper thought into the skills as well as the talent trees. Georg continues to explain:

“A Scoundrel on the other hand will have fewer abilities that modify their cover mechanic and can be played in a way that does not rely on cover very much or at all. Their Stealth Field generator allows them to approach targets unseen and they have a decent arsenal of close to mid range scatter gun abilities and melee moves to round out their blaster capabilities.”

This little post by Georg does more than just tell us about Smugglers and cover; it gives us a real inside look into what different classes will play like. It shows up a deeper insight to talents, talent trees and other abilities. It just gets me even more excited about SWTOR. What about you?

Gabe Amatangelo on SWTOR's PVP matchmaking system

The PVP system in SWTOR has been very hush, hush until lately when the hands-on reports started coming out. Gabe Amatangelo sheds a little more light on how exactly the global PVP system is going to work. Many other MMOs have tried to conquer the PVP system by allowing massive combat to take place cross server or realm. SWTOR doesn’t seem to want to take on this idea. Their thinking pattern behind having server-based PVP systems is to create cohesion between players of the same faction and rivalries from the opposing faction.

When PVP is done cross-server it doesn’t make it as personal as having someone from your own server take you on. This will breed not only a better storyline for those who really enjoy it but it will take away from the anonymous feel of killing someone you’ll probably never see again. Now the biggest problem with doing same server PVP is that the queue times are normally incredibly long and one server can be better than another. So what’s the solution to this problem? Queue balance, according to Gabe.

In SWTOR you’ll be able to queue at any level and be able to join battles with higher or lower level characters while keeping everyone equally capable of performing tasks. If you’re level 20 you’ll first be queued with as many other level 20’s as possible. If there aren’t enough level 20’s to do the battle, the system will pair you up with other levels and balance out lower levels once the game starts. The balance will start to take effect the more time that passes without being paired up. Theoretically, SWTOR wants to make it so that each person in the battle is equal to about 80% of the fighting capability of the highest level person in the battle. Will this work? Only time and blowing people up will really tell.

The Guild Sphere: The Order of the Sith Lords

This week I sat down with some awesome people from The Order of the Sith Lords, a RPPvE guild that looks to be a lot of fun, hope you all enjoy.

Where did your guilds name come from?
Well Vandin and I as huge SW fans took the name from Bane's Sith legacy. A lot of people started to make fun of when we first started but hey, we are still here haha.

Can you give me a quick 2-3 sentance description of your guild?
Our guild mainly wants to focus on the PVE aspect of the game, we have a lot of members with a past when it comes to raiding. On the other hand we are also HUGE nerds and we will be doing a lot of RP events with other guilds.

How did your guild come about?
Vandin and I had been following SWTOR for about two years and had been playing MMO's together for awhile, we played SWG for longer than we should have haha. We figured we had been in great guilds before and learned the tricks of the trade, that maybe it was time for us to try to make one of our own. It has been a learning experience for us both and I think that we have managed to get it down now.

What kind of play style do you focus on? PvE, PvP, RP:
Our over all main focus will be on PVE and raiding, we are going to be semi-hardcore even though we know that is kind of a odd way to put it. We understand that people have lives outside of MMO's and have other things that they need to take care of in there actual lives. We will also be giving members a great RP experience, we have been doing old school play by thread stuff and story writing.

What is your guild set up? How do you run your guild?
Our guild has me (Malus) as the over all main leader, with Vandin my SIC leading the council. We try to keep the amount of titles we have to a minimun because in our experience it can make things confusing. There are only eight council memebrs at a time so they vote on major things and the rest is just Vandin and I doing what we do.

How serious do you play and/or run the guild?
We like to have a good time with our guild and the members we aren't above joking around on threads and making fun of each other from time to time. We will raid very hard though and will take raiding very seriously, we aren't going to force players to play a certain way for us. The point of a guild is to join like minded people right?

Do you have ranks or a certain hierarchy in your guild?
If yes, could you tell us a bit about it? As stated above yes, however too many titles for a small guild can kill it so we try to keep it simple. We only have two raid leaders in different time zones to cover all of the bases, the rest is above and is very simple.

Why did you choose the Republic?
We chose Sith because lets face it Sith are better, just kidding calm down. We chose Sith because we always sided more with them in the movies and in the EU, we have always been the "Bad Guys" in every game not just MMO's. You better believe Revan was for sure dominating the Republic when we were playing KOTOR.

Why do you run a guild?
We just wanted to make a fun experience that was laid back and not so hectic for some good people, end of story.

How do you approach Raid Planning?
We will take it very serious, if you say you will be at a Raid be there don't make promises you cant keep. We will try different stuff and if we all just get merced every time we will switch it up and hit the good old chalk board again.

Are you always open for new recruits or do you want to keep a certain guild size?
We would like to keep our guild some what smaller but we arent going to turn down good people who want to have fun, thats what we are here for. We like the tight family feel of our guild and we would like to keep it that way.

Age Requirement?
We do have an age requirment on our guild and our titles, you must be 15 to get into the guild and at least 16 to be granted a title.

Guild size?

What makes your guild stand out from everyone else? What makes your guild unique?
The laid back style I think, and I'm crazy about good RP stories and sticking to SW canon. We have large on-going stories most of the time members can get into and get there name out there in the guild.

How do you spend your time until release? Do you know each other in real life or do you spend a lot of time on forums?
We spend a ton of time on our forums talking to each other, and yes a few of us know each other in real life but not the whole guild.

What Other Games are you currently playing as a guild?
A few of us are playing RIFT some others are playing Jedi Knight Jedi Academy, just a good mix of all games.

If somebody is interested now how and where can they apply for membership?
They can apply by going to our site www.thewayofthesith.guildlaunch.com

One last question, if there was one thing you could ask the Dev's to include, what would it be?
GUILD CITIES! FAT CHANCE

IMDB Lists SWTOR Voice Talent (Look Who’s Talking)

Thanks to The Movie Internet Database (aka IMDB) - the greatest source of film industry information available to hacks like me - we now have some idea of exactly who is lined up to play the voices in Star Wars: The old Republic

Employing all of my powers of deduction and film knowledge, I've picked out Joseph Gatt as the most recognisable face on the list, since I've just seen him blued up and frozen as a Frost Giant in Kenneth Branagh's spectacular Thor adaptation. But there are some more recognisable talents here, even if you don't know the names or the faces: names like Jennifer Hale, who is a demi-God of the voice-work universe, and who has also already worked on a number of Star Wars videogame properties including Knights of the Old Republic.

Michelle Bonilla does the voices of Huttese Alien / Nautolan Alien / Ortolan Alien / Various. You may know Michelle from “Saving Grace” or “All My Children” but what you might not know is that she also did the voice of White Legs in Fallout: New Vegas.

Alex Fernandez does a variety of voices in SWTOR and is known for his roles in “Criminal Minds” and “Desperate Housewives”. He also did voices for Call of Duty: Black Ops and SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals plus a host of other video games.

Jennifer Hale is no stranger to video game voicing. She was in Mass Effect 2, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, Clash of the Titans and more. She was also in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series. And she’s doing voicing for Mass Effect 3 as well.

Then there's Juliet Landau (daughter of Martin, and far more attractive), who memorably "went English" as the Nancy to Spike's Sid in Buffy The Vampire Slayer (and later Angel of course), and the Twilight saga's Tinsel Korey.

Many actors/voice actors took on various roles in the game to include: Ann Christine, Crista Flanagan, Tinsel Korey, Fay Masterson, D.C. Douglas, Michael Bower, R. Brandon Johnson, Scott Whyte, Travis Willingham, Nan McNamara, Victor Slezak, Alex Fernandez, Mark Moseley, Michael Benyaer, Kosha England, Ewan Bailey, Ryan Kitley and Barry Ellis.

So, not exactly a stellar cast, but it is nice to see that there are some geeky picks in amongst the voice actors, as well as some familiar voices from other Star Wars projects to dial up the credentials and give militantly observant fans something to crow about.

Have a look at the list for yourself. Not many roles are mapped out clearly yet, but it seems odd that someone has gone out of their way to name every single one of Alex Fernandez's roles. There is a serious amount of pleasure to be had in going through all the names and recognising them for minor speaking roles in videogames and cartoons, trust me.

Do you see any names you recognize? They have a great voice lineup here, for sure!

Georg Zoeller Clears Up SWTOR Combat Confusions

With everyone talking about SWTOR and few of us actually able to try out the game for ourselves, there have been some questions, confusions and misconceptions about certain aspects of combat.

Principal Lead Combat Designer, Greg Zoeller addresses some of these on the official SWTOR forums. One issue was enemy behavior. Are those mobs just going to stand around waiting for us to kill them?

Actually, they’re not! Zoeller says, “Enemies will definitely not just stand around waiting to be attacked, even though, in the end, that's kind of their purpose in an MMO (they are enemies, after all).”

He goes on to give some specific examples of what we can expect from enemy behavior:

· They engage in a variety of activities when not in combat, which include patrols and overwatch over areas where that makes sense.
· When traversing through hostile territory, it is usually a good idea to fully assess the situation before attacking - just because there's two sandpeople leisurely lounging at the sarlacc pit, it doesn't mean there isn't a sniper deployed on a dune nearby covering the camp.
· At some times, this can be even a bit unfair - Who'd know that the emergency protocol for the missile platform involved a special ops team rappelling in from above when the alarm is triggered... or who knew that the Jawas had shoulder mounted rocket launchers in their backpacks.
· When engaged, blaster wielding humanoids often attempt to disperse and find cover, which can mix things up. Humanoids that perceive friendly targets engage enemies will often join the fight as well.
· Droids are usually a bit more straightforward, as their programming often miraculously omits that sense of self preservation seen in humanoids. Few might take cover, but then again, if you have big guns or deploy-able shields, you might not have to.
· Smarter / Stronger enemies also react to changing conditions in battle. If a smuggler or agent think they can be a ******** and try to wear down an entire encounter full of enemies by slowly taking potshots from cover, they'll be surprised to find that thermal detonators or targeted headshots make a very effective counter to that kind of behavior.(Source: Greg Zoeller)

He goes on to talk about how many of the enemies found in the game will have special attacks, defenses or other abilities. How cool is that? Smart enemies in an MMORPG. I like it!

Zoeller also addresses some other issues related to combat in SWTOR on the forums. Many people have been asking why there is no auto attack and if this means that the developers have something specifically against auto attack.

Zoeller explains that there is no auto attack because it simply does not work with the combat system of TOR- no more and no less should be read into it. If you’ve been one of the lucky few to try out the game so far, then you will understand what he means.

“In fact, whenever we say 'Feature X will not be in the game at launch', the wrong conclusion to make is 'BioWare hates Feature X and will never do it'.” Says Zoeller.

He goes on to talk about macros, which have very little in common with auto attack but still come up together often. The rumor mill says that there will be no macros on launch, leading some people to believe this means no macros ever for TOR.

Zoeller says, “We're not opposed to macros, we don't hate them, in fact we will probably add them, but probably not for launch.”

Play Star Wars Tie Fighter in Chrome

Nothing quite beats free stuff, unless its free stuff that his an undeniably nostalgic taste to it, and which thus has the power to transport recipients back to a simpler, more magical time before Jar Jar and before everyone suspected that Mr Lucas might be in it for more than just the pleasure of creating art. And now, we have some exciting news on that front, thanks to some very clever people who have announced that you can now play Star Wars Tie Fighter - the iconic DOS game from 1994 - using only the power of Chrome.

If you're a Chrome user, you might already know of Native Client (NaCl), but if not it's a new open-source development that allows developers “to build web applications that seamlessly execute native compiled code inside the browser”.

And as I say, it looks like the technology is already being put to good use, thanks to the clever web-wizrds at NaClBox who have created a DOSBox port that works with Native Client to allow browser based DOS videogame play. So basically, that means no downloads and no installations needed. Free Stuff!

For more information on how to play - visit the NaClBox and follow their instructions (as it's all frightfully boring to regurgitate here). And then lose hours to reliving past DOS-based glories, like I just did.

Know your lore: Warb Null

Warb Null was a dark side apprentice and King Ommin's armored commander of the Naddist forces during the First Battle of Onderon in the Freedon Nadd Uprising. Originally named Shas Dovos, Null was formerly an aspiring young student of metalwork, though when a sinister Sith spirit tricked him into constructing a tainted suit of armor, he became a mindless servant of the dark side. The spirit resided in the very pages of an ancient Sith book discovered by Dovos in the wilds of his native planet Onderon, and eventually the spirit fused Dovos to the dark armor and renamed him Warb Null.

Null became the leader of the Naddists who raided the city of Iziz during the Freedon Nadd Uprising. They defeated the Onderonian forces, as well as a team of Jedi sent by the Galactic Republic, and successfully recaptured the sarcophagi of Ommin's late wife Amanoa, and the former Dark Lord of the Sith Freedon Nadd. Later, Warb Null helped free Ommin from his life-support facility, though this time the young Jedi Knights he had previously defeated were too strong; Ulic Qel-Droma engaged the Sith warrior in a duel, and decapitated him. Null's death was, in the end, insignificant to Ommin, who felt the armor-clad soldier had fulfilled his purpose.

Warb Null was created by Star Wars writer Tom Veitch for the first issue of The Freedon Nadd Uprising sub-series, part of the Tales of the Jedi comic series. He was illustrated by Tony Akins, Denis Rodier and Suzanne Bourdages in his only appearance. His backstory was later expanded upon in the Tales of the Jedi Companion, a RPG supplement to the Tales of the Jedi series.

Biography
Warb Null was born under the name of Shas Dovos on the planet Onderon sometime during the height of the Galactic Republic. Dovos was a dedicated student of metallurgy in his youth, learning the intricate craft of metalworking. Onderon had a history of leaders who worshiped the dark side, so a great many ancient Sith artifacts were stored all over the planet. The great walled city of Iziz was the only area of the planet not tormented by vicious beasts, and some time before the Great Sith War, Dovos traveled to one of the wild regions on the planet during his studies, where he stumbled upon a hidden dark side treasury. The young Onderonian was Force-sensitive himself, and one particular Sith artifact piqued his interest—an ancient dark-side book hand-written by a member of the old Sith Empire. Dovos stole the book and returned to his home-city, desperate to uncover the secrets hidden deep inside the ancient document.

Initially, he was fascinated with the book, though soon his fascination turned into complete obsession. He spent years attempting to break the coding of the book, until he had forsaken his studies and lost interest in the other aspects of his life. He saw it as his destiny to uncover the book's secrets and to wield its power. Eventually, he deciphered the Sith lore, and began construction on a set of specialized Sith armor, which would grant its wearer great power. In his forge deep beneath Onderon's surface, Dovos used his basic Sith magic, combined with his extensive knowledge of alloys and metals, to forge the blackened helmet, breasplate and gauntlets of the massive suit of armor. After working for days on end, Shas Dovos's suit of armor was complete; however, he was having doubts about his worthiness to wear it. He was unsure of his grasp of the Sith magic necessary to produce such a weapon, worried that it would be wasted on someone who had to resort to theft to acquire the armor.

However, he soon overcame his doubtfulness, reasoning that if had not been for him, the knowledge behind the armor would still be hidden in obscurity; if anyone deserved to wear, he did. Suddenly, a voice spoke out, telling Dovos that he would wear the armor. The spirit of the Sith Lord who had written the book centuries ago appeared, telling the young man that it was the keeper of the book, that without the spirit keeping safe, the Sith lore would have crumbled to dust decades ago. Shas Dovos became fearful, and finally realized the dangers of his taking the book. The Sith protector told Dovos that it had been slowly and subtly influencing him, affected his dreams and thoughts, and making him become obsessed with the construction of the armor. The spirit declared Dovos its disciple, telling him that he would become an "extension" of the Sith Lord, using the Sith spirit's Force abilities and Dovos's powerful armor to help restore the glory of the Sith Empire. Dovos was still scared of the Humanoid spirit, though the being was far too powerful for the former student to defeat. The Sith spirit re-named him Warb Null, and used its ancient powers to fuse the new Sith disciple to his newly crafted armor. Warb Null became a mindless Sith Warrior, remembering little of his previous life. Warb Null had been tricked into creating the armor by the Sith spirit, and now he was nothing more than a pawn of the long-dead dark sider.

Warb later constructed a large, green-bladed lightsaber, with a hilt several times the length and width of a usual lightsaber—he wielded it aggressively, though he was undoubtedly skilled with the weapon. The Sith spirit taught him several old Sith powers—all of which would be necessary in the mission which the Sith warrior had been assigned. Onderon's queen, a Sith worshiper herself, had been killed by a Jedi task Force during the Beast Wars of Onderon, and her sarcophagus, along with that of Freedon Nadd, former Dark Lord of the Sith, were being relocated to one of the planet's moons, a jungle-world named Dxun. The late Amanoa's husband, Ommin, was a former student of Nadd and a powerful wielder of the dark side. Ommin remained alive during Warb Null's time, but the ancient Onderonian was slowly dying, and unable to return the dark side to Onderon himself. Through the spirit, Ommin enlisted Null to lead an assault on the world's capital, Iziz. Null, aided by hundreds of loyal Naddists, was to reclaim the sarcophagi and remove them to the Sith warrior's underground base.

The Freedon Nadd Uprising
Null and the Naddists devised a plan to steal Amanoa and Nadd's sarcophagi from the streets of Iziz—they would use great machines to emerge from their underground base, take hold of the bodies of the deceased dark siders and return to their base. Several of the wealthier Naddists purchased several Akin-Dower Groundborers—colossal machines used to create massive tunnels—and fitted them with medium blasters, turning the mining vehicles into offensive monstrosities. The machines could hold hundreds of men inside, with enough space to store the two sarcophagi, so they were very suitable for their mission.

In 3,998 BBY, Warb Null led the assault on Iziz which marked the Freedon Nadd Uprising. Amanoa's daughter, Queen Galia had married Oron Kira, the leader of the Beast Riders, thus ending the traditional animosity between the Onderonian aristocracy and the Beast Riders. The two new rulers of Onderon led the procession of the great sarcophagi to the shuttles which would transport them to Dxun, closely followed by Jedi Master Arca Jeth and his apprentices, Tott Doneeta, Oss Wilum, Cay Qel-Droma and his brother Ulic. Null and his loyal Naddist warriors then suddenly burst from the ground in one of their vast war machines, charging toward the procession. Null had his men take the Nadd and the queen's bodies, telling them he would deal with the Jedi. As Null approached the group of Jedi, Master Arca, the most powerful of them by far, was struck by an invisible blow through the Force, incapacitating him and leaving the four Jedi students to face Warb Null alone.

The huge Sith warrior clashed with the four young Jedi, who were slowly being demoralized by the dark energies permeating from Null's blackened armor. Their sabers clashed many times, though the man formerly known as Shas Dovos proved too strong for the Jedi, ensuring that they would not interfere with the Naddists attempts to reclaim the sarcophagi of the former Sith worshipers. Meanwhile, the other soldiers loyal to Ommin had successfully managed to steal the two stone coffins, despite the efforts of Oron Kira and his Beast Riders. Realizing his task was complete, Null fled back to the war machine, where his men had transported the sarcophagi to. When Null reached the machine, they retreated down into the sub-levels of Iziz, ready to commence the next phase of their plan.

Warb and the Naddists remained deep in the subterranean tunnels of Iziz as Master Arca—now recovered from his mysterious attack—and the other Jedi visited King Ommin in his life-support city below the Onderonian palace. Arca thought Ommin to be a powerless, crippled old man, however in truth Ommin was still very powerful. At the appearance of the spirit of Freedon Nadd, Ommin suddenly sprang to action, smothering Arca with dark side energies and calling for his loyal servant, Warb Null, and the remainder of his warriors to arrive. Null and the finest of the Naddist soldiers smashed through the facility's walls, launching yet another surprise attack at the Republic representatives. Ommin fled with Arca's limp body, while Ulic Qel-Droma, desperate at the apparent loss of his master, lashed out at Warb Null, who was busy keeping the other Jedi at bay. Ommin and Nadd knew their pawn would be defeated by the vengeful young Jedi, though they did nothing to prevent it, as they recognized the potential for Qel-Droma as a Sith. The young Human Jedi jumped through the air, surprising the iron-clad Sith warrior. In one blow, Ulic Qel-Droma decapitated Warb Null, ending the Onderonian's brief time as a Sith. Warb Null's death was mourned by none; he had left behind and forgotten his former life, while his dark side superiors felt tha the had succeeded in fulfilling his purpose. Ultimately, Warb Null was expendable to those he served with loyalty.

Faction Lore: Hutt Cartel

"The Hutts wouldn't dare incur our wrath, master."
―Sev'rance Tann

The Hutt Cartel were a powerful crime syndicate- a business alliance of Hutts. It had a personal military of both an army and Starfleet and waged war with the Zann Consortium until the Battle of Hypori.
Jabba Desilijic Tiure held a great deal of power in the Hutt Cartel.

History
The Hutts have a rich history. During the time of the Great Galactic War, the Hutt Cartel grew displeased with the Sith Emperor because he left them out of his plans and intrigues. But the Republic was unsuccessful in getting the Hutts’ support against the Empire so the Cartel remained neutral in war, like many others who made up the criminal underworld.

The Cartel had control of the Kaer Orbital Platform a few decades before the Clone Wars after they forced the InterGalactic Banking Clan off the Platform. They later abandoned it, finding it useless.

Clone Wars
During the Clone Wars, Boorka the Hutt held considerable power. He co-operated with Sev'rance Tann during the early days of the War and gathered information about the Decimator a Republic superweapon which was still in development. Annoyed by the trade activity of the Galactic Republic, he agreed to reveal their secret plan to the Separists.

For turning against the Jabba, he lost a great deal of forces, except for some mercenaries but he was protected by the Separists and in exchange for giving them the information about the Decimator, he requested that Tann destroy the Republic Spaceport.

Boorka was later killed by Republic forces during the Second Battle of Tatooine, at the encouragement of Jabba the Hutt, who placed a large bounty on his head. Jabba assisted the Republic General Echuu Shen-Jon in return during the Second Battle of Tatooine.

Galactic Civil War
During the Galactic Civil War, Jabba formed a successful alliance with Tyber Zann. This was successful for some time until Zann stole a valuable Sith artifact on Felucia. Zann was caught and imprisoned on Kessel. To cover the costs of the stolen artifact, the Hutt Cartel acquired all of the Zann Consortium assets for compensation.

Later, Zann would break out of Kessel and rebuild his forces. He would then corrupt many of the Cartel’s planets. This conflict lasted until the Battle of Hypori which left the Cartel crippled but far from destroyed.

Hutt Space
Hutt Space was a region of the galaxy found on the border between the Mid Rim and the Outer Rim Territories. It was near the entrance to Wild Space and bordered on the Tion Hegemony. Hutt Space was named for the Hutt species, who dominated the region. It is not certain how many planets occupied Hutt Space but some estimates range from a few hundred to a thousand inhabited worlds.

Politics
The Hutt Cartel was governed by the Clans of the Ancients—later known as the Hutt Grand Council- which was composed of every Hutt clan. The Hutt Grand Council ruled the region and would oversee the activities of the Hutt Clans as well as their criminal syndicates.

Hutt Space was considered a lawless expanse that have the most powerful and corrupt of the Hutt clans. It had an infamous reputation for piracy, smuggling and open criminal activity.

Hutt Empire
In Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Bastila Shan says the Hutts never built an empire.
"In the years before the Republic the Hutts were a dominant force in the galaxy, but they never constructed an empire."
―Bastila Shan
Between the fall of the Infinite Empire and the rise of the Republic, the Hutt Empire was the major power in the galaxy.

The Hutts continued to be a galactic power until the territory's demolition in 26 ABY by the Yuuzhan Vong Empire during the Extra-galactic invasion.
