The Old Republic Preview from PCGamer

“The Old Republic is a monster. I can’t wait to play more.” That pretty much sums up the 1880+ word preview experience from PCGamer.com.

These previews are the best things for those who have not been able to play the game for themselves yet. It gives us all a deeper look into SWTOR, what it is about, what others think about it and what we have to look forward to. Even when you think you’ve heard it all, along comes a new preview or review with info or perspective you didn’t know before.

This is a great review because it does more than just recap the things we already know (although it does a little bit of that, too). It also tells us what makes this game different or unique from others on the market. When you’re looking to invest in a game like SWTOR, especially one with a monthly subscription, these are the things you really want to know.

You will ask yourself “What’s in it for me?” and “Is it really worth it?”

This preview by PCGamer attempts to answer those questions plus more.

Some words on character selection:

I was surprised at the flexibility available in TOR’s character selection – there are far more examples of body types, haircuts, beards and random facial accruements than I’m used to in WoW, say. I was so surprised by just how fat your character can be, I’ve hereby vowed that every character in my menagerie will be artfully modelled on a lardier version of the Pillsbury Doughboy. Even the ladies.

Some words on combat:

Combat surprised me. When you’re levelling in WoW, you’re usually peeling off single baddies from groups, dealing with them one by one. You’re careful to watch for patrols, and if you get ambushed by more than one, you’ll probably have to quaff a health potion or blow a cooldown. Most monsters have one or two abilities that they spam. You’ll die if you take on more than two mobs. In The Old Republic, the default combat scenario is to face three or more linked enemies.

Dialogue and conversation:

I wondered how dialogue and conversation would work in practice: BioWare’s solution is pretty smart. If you’re about to have a story moment, you’ll pass through a glowing green forcefield – creating a separate instance of the game for you and your party. In there, you might fight a baddie, or talk to an NPC, but you’ll do it isolated from other players. All quests are introduced by dialogue and a cutscene, and when you’re talking to a quest-giver, the rest of the world will see a little speech bubble over your head.

Don't be Banned from Game Testing- Know the Rules of Beta

As more people are getting into game testing now and game testing is open to European players as well, we will hear about more people in game testing. While it is a violation to screen capture or talk about certain aspects of the game, there will probably be friends who talk and share certain pieces of info. But you better be careful about what you share and how.

If you get in, you may find yourself so excited, you want to shout it to the rooftops. Be aware, however, that while you can tell the world you are game testing, you cannot tell them about what you are doing in testing or reveal things about the game itself.

The SWTOR beta/game testing is the most strict I have ever even heard of and I have beta'd TONS of games over the years. You can't use Vent, you must be 18 or older, you cannot log in from anywhere other than your own IP... etc. This is expected, really, in a game as popular and one that is so deeply based on storyline.

If you’re one of those players who just clicks “accept” and then jumps right into the game, then you might be missing out on important info that could cost you your beta/game testing access. For example…

As noted in the game testing FAQ:

Are we allowed to take screenshots or videos?
No. Sharing screenshots or videos with anyone is a direct violation of the NDA you agreed to when you accepted the testing invitation. We take this very seriously and violations could result in your account being permanently suspended and serious legal action. You can review the terms of the agreement here: http://www.swtor.com/game-testing-agreement.

Can I play the game from multiple locations?
While it is acceptable to install the game on more than one machine at your home, you should avoid playing from multiple physical locations. You should also NEVER install or play the game in a public place. We monitor testing accounts closely, and do remove accounts from the program if we have reason to believe you are sharing your account or that you have sold it.

These are just two samplings of the rules and expectations of game testing. If you’re in (or get in) be sure to read the full game testing agreement so you don’t lose the opportunity you have waited so long for.

ADDENDUM B of the Game Testing Agreement gives examples of confidential information (that which you may not disclose):

1. Any contact/private information for BWA or LucasArts personnel that is provided to you.
2. Any contact information (address, password, etc.) to any private areas for use in connection with the Game Program, including but not limited to, chat, email and message boards.
3. Any information/discussions/postings from the private boards or forum for the Game Program.
4. Any comments/information that would allow people who are not currently part of the Game Program to get access to the Game Program or Game through either legitimate or illegitimate means.
5. Post or distribute any screen captures, pictures, videos, podcasts, screenshots or any other representations, known or unknown, of any content in the Game or other Game Materials.
6. Any public posting or commentary of the game based on your participation in the Game Program.
7. Any comments or discussions on new features or other new functionalities in the Game or other Game Materials.
8. Any details regarding the stability of the Game or the Game servers.
9. General comments about the Game’s overall development.
10. Any comments on any aspect of the Game or other Game Materials not covered by Addendum A above.

SWTOR Game Tester Experience Email

“This is not the email you are looking for. Move along…”

Feel like you were just a victim of Jedi mind tricks? If you got the very confusing email asking you if you enjoyed your tester experience in SWTOR and if you would like to fill out a survey to share your opinions- don’t panic!

First, you are not alone.
Second, you are not invited to the beta with this email.

Sorry to burst your bubble...

When the email came in to me last night, my cell phone, Facebook and email blew up with friends asking me if I got it, too and if I knew what it was about. (When did I become the authority on such matters?) So I headed straight over to Twitter and asked Stephen Reid (that’s his job, right?) but he was in flight coming home to Austin so it took a little while for him to get back with us and droves of other people were in freak-out mode by that point.

Senior Community Coordinator David Bass was there to help us out and let us know that they were investigating the matter. His advice? “Hang tight. And remain calm. :)”

Easier said than done, my friend. So while countless numbers of SWTOR fans searched furiously through their spam inboxes and Mr. Reid landed in Austin to catch wind of the disaster, we set out to investigate.

It turns out this was “human error” and emails were sent out to their general email list, rather than to specific tester emails. This is no way affects your chances to get into testing in the future.

To say that some people are ticked is an understatement. They should at least get some kudos for being a customer service department that actually manned up and admitted “human error”, no?

Reid’s answer on the fiasco:

"We can't apologize enough for getting your hopes up. Sorry again. Those responsible will endure a thousand years in the Sarlacc Pit."

If you’re still not sure whether or not you got in to game testing or a situation like this arises in the future, there is a simple fix. First, you can go to your account on the SWTOR forums, click your name, go to “account” and scroll down. If you get the notification that you will be considered for testing, then you are not yet in the testing. Sorry :/

You can also go here to check your game testing status.

Star Wars: Revan Novel Spoilers- an Unofficial Review

We found an interesting write-up about the Revan novel that contains spoilers of the storyline for SWTOR and the novel.

In a post on Spacebattles.com, user “Sparris” posts, “After getting and reading an uncorrected proof of this story, pretty sure most people will think it sucks.”

He goes on to give about 600 words or so of a summary of the novel that portrays it in a less-than-interesting light. However, we also have to keep in mind that this is one person’s opinion and a rough summary at that and we don’t actually see any more than a pic of the alleged cover of the proof of the novel.

SPOILERS INCOMING:

The poster says:

There are three main characters throughout: Revan, the Exile (now named Meetra Surik,) and a Sith Lord in the Emperor's service named Darth Scourge.
Ok, fair enough. What’s next?
Revan's story is pretty simple. His dreams are bothering so he leaves his newly pregnant wife to go find out what's going on. He starts off his quest by visiting a planet the Mandolorians are on and helping Canderous find the old Mandalore's mask. Kills Canderous' wife in the process. The information he finds there leads him to the Emperor's home world, which has been stripped of life and made completely empty of the Force. Revan upon leaving is shot down by Scourge and his master and then drugged for two years so he can't do anything.

He goes on to say that Scourge is also simple he says “Karpyshyn takes the game he did not write for and retcons everything interesting out of it.”

Blah…blah…blah… basically he hates the story.

I don’t know how I feel about his analysis though. Personally, I like Karpyshyn’s work and while I have yet to read this novel, I don’t know how pressed I am to take the opinions of some anonymous guy on the Internet. It’s far from an official synopsis and I prefer to judge my books for myself.

If you don’t mind the spoilers, give it a read for yourself and let us know what you think.

Blizzard Revealing Project Titan Next Month? - Gloves are off!

Update: In a comment to IGN, a Blizzard representative stated that its 'unannounced MMO' will not be talked about at this year's BlizzCon

The rumor mill is out and it looks like the long awaited “casual MMO” from Blizzard code named Titan may be revealed next month at BlizzCon 2011. Pressures from the release date announcement of SWTOR and the delay of Diablo 3 may have led Blizzard to push up the release of news about their new secret project.

At least one analyst believes the news might be coming sooner than we thought.

"If they are holding any juicy details, it's going to be announced at BlizzCon," M2 Research senior analyst Billy Pidgeon said. "The big news is probably going to be a Diablo 3 date and a possible new announcement about one or more new properties."

Previous reports have revealed rumors about this potential project. They tell us it’s an MMO based on an entirely new IP and that it will be complementary to Blizzard’s very popular World of Warcraft, rather than competition for the existing MMORPG. Leaked rumors say it could be slotted for Q4 2013 release along with the 5th WoW expansion.

In all the excitement and talk of SWTOR, we have seen more than our fair share of comparisons to WoW. In fact, some industry experts say SWTOR will never be considered a complete success unless it beats WoW in sales and records. There is no doubt that BioWare and Blizzard are slotted opponents in the MMORPG war right now. Revealing this new project could be Blizzard’s next move to keep the fans interested.

We will have to wait for October 21-22 to find out if Blizzard is really going to release the info about Project Titan.

EU Beta has Begun!

It’s official- Europe now has beta testing for SWTOR! And it’s about time, right?

In a post on the official SWTOR forums, Chris Collins, European Community Manager announced:

“Today, we’re excited to announce that we are sending out a batch of invites! In particular, this initial batch marks the start of a series of invites to our larger European player base, who get the chance to join the Star Wars: The Old Republic Game Testing program and provide feedback during the months up until launch.
In other exciting news, we’ll be making further announcements in the coming days and weeks, as we update you on Game Testing on the European service. On top of that, we’ll also be announcing details around the upcoming Beta Testing Weekends!
With the launch drawing ever-closer, we’re more excited than ever to receive your feedback on the game to help make the launch as smooth as possible.”

This is great news to everyone in Europe waiting to get their own opportunity to beta test the game. Beta testing and game testing to European players will work the same way as it has with North America. If you signed up for game testing through the official website, you will get an email to the email address you signed up for if you are chosen to test the game.

Will you be lucky enough to get into game testing?

Here’s hoping!

Returning To Jedi: The Best Ever Fan Edit?

There are a nuumber of great Fan Edits available for the Star Wars films - the most famous of which is probably The Phantom Edit which righted the many wrongs of George Lucas' first prequel film (chiefly by removing Jar Jar Binks influence), but by far the best, in terms of the effect the edit has on the viewing experience of the original film has to be Jambedavdar's Returning To Jedi.

The edit is effectively a ‘commentary documentary’, combining existing behind the scenes footage with a newly created audio commentary and text facts, and despite not having all of the details released as part of the Complete Saga blu-ray release (yet) it still stands as one of the most in-depth and informative companion pieces to the entire Star Wars universe.

And the good news for all Star Wars fans is that Returning To Jedi is now available in its entirety and for free on youtube - so you can watch it below...

Hands-on Preview: Star Wars: The Old Republic

In this article, Leo Stiles of Joe.ie tell us about his hands-on preview of SWTOR. Now that more and more players are getting access to the game, we are hearing a lot of different reviews and previews but it never hurts to get another opinion on the game.

From the moment Leo chose his class as a Bounty Hunter, he got treated to a wonderful cut scene displaying some graphics he can only describe as “remarkable”. If the cartoon style graphics have you on the fence then you should really see them in action as everything flows perfectly together.

According to Leo, the questing is so well done you won’t feel like your simply “gathering” materials or “counting kills” because they are minor parts to the larger story. Fulfilling the quests in the game are so in depth to the story line that they are entertaining and not a level grind; major plus for all MMORPG players out there who are tired of wasting 3 hours collecting a piece of fabric.

The resurrection options are nothing short of what you would expect from a BioWare game and a Star Wars title. You have the option to choose a med droid or to be resurrected in a safe zone. Both have pros and cons so it will be up to the player to determine the best course of action for each encounter. (An aspect of the game we have written about here before.)

Although it is too soon to tell for sure whether the character development will continue on this marvelous track, the first glimpse shows much promise. He seems to think that will all that Star Wars: The Old Republic has to offer fans new and old will love this game from the first time they boot it up. So we call this one another positive review for SWTOR.

Keep in mind that this is only the highlights of the article written by Leo Stiles. You can read the whole thing for yourself at Joe.ie.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Sales Predicted To Hit 3 Million In Year 1

Now that we know a release date for SWTOR, we see more and more people talking about just how popular this game will be.

Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz predicts that the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic will sell 3 million units in its first year.

The numbers expected in the first year are at an incredible $3 million with the following year bringing in about $2 million. These numbers are astounding as before the release date the projected sales were considerably lower. The new numbers are based off of the projected pricing plan for the game.

Star Wars: the Old Republic will be released in the US on Dec 20, 2011 and in the UK on Dec 22, 2011. The announcement of the release date brought many unseen Star Wars fans rushing to the stores to quickly preorder their copy of the game. This is what increased the number of expected gamers.

There is a paid subscription fee for playing the game monthly but it rivals those of other popular MMOs with a few different options to choose from. Your options are as follows:

  • $14.99 for one month at a time
  • $41.97 for 3 months at a time
  • $77.94 for 6 months at a time

You can see the discounts of buying a few months at a time, which will be a great option for all the loyal fans and something that many gamers will surely take advantage of.

Let’s not forget that with the purchase of the game, you’ll also receive your first 30 days of game play for free, which is something all gamers will love.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Will Feature Achievements at Launch

Many MMOs that we have come to love feature achievements and Star Wars: The Old Republic will not be any different. However, the type of achievements will be a little different from what you may be used to, at least at first. These are not your typical WoW-type achievements.

At this time, Daniel Erickson, the lead writer of Bioware stated that “achievements” would appear in SWTOR when it launches. However, the ones that appear with the launch will be detailed achievements for doing heroic things such as fighting the bosses on each planet.

Just what kind of achievements are we going to see on ship?

Erickson explains to DarthHater at Eurogamer Expo:

They're not going to be the achievements, the crazy achievements that you have to place everywhere, that are like, "Hey if you drink 6 beers and fart in a cantina," those are not going the achievements to go in. Version 1 of the achievement system which go in, which is actually doing big, heroic stuff, because there's a ton of great optional content in The Old Republic, like, "Hey, I went to every world and kicked the world boss's ass." Those kinds of achievements. That's going to be the level one system. People need reasons to go back to planets and run around and do that other stuff, so that will come second. The first system is, "Hey, here's my bragging rights, here's the bad ass stuff I did in-game."

The point of the achievements that will be present at launch are to encourage the players to really experience the game. This means traveling beyond your questing and required zones and seeing all the content. Just seeing the content won’t be enough, though. While these achievements are completely optional, they stem from doing some really cool and noble actions in the game.

Erickson also made the statement that in the future, sometime after the launch, more achievements will be added. These will include the silly tasks designed for fun and entertainment purposes for gamers who enjoy a little humor in their games. However, there is no release date for those achievements at this time.

Stephen Reid Clarifies Misunderstanding of Shack News Article

With the news of an official release date for SWTOR out there, one huge milestone is now passed. Now we have many new questions erupting as players want to know exactly when they are going to get their own chance to play. A misunderstanding had many players worrying they would not get to play due to possible staggered releases.

User Darhan posts in the official forums:

It seems that not only are they preparing for stable servers by keeping pre-order numbers limited, but even for those of us who have pre-ordered: our access to the game may not be granted as fast as we had hoped. In the article, they discuss slowly granting access to the game over an undisclosed period of time to the point that some folks may barely recieve any early access to the game, if any at all. Of course, this is all for the sake of a high quality launch and attempting to keep that HUGE problem every online game has at launch at bay. We'll have to see how that works out, and hope that it doesn't prevent those that are invested in their game already from playing for too long.

He is referencing an article by Shacknews.com that suggests that staggered releases may mean certain players won’t get to start on the real start day. Their article references BioWare's Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk and their talk with Gamesindustry.biz that we brought you news of yesterday:

"It comes from a desire to have a high quality service for our fans, really stable and scalable and accessible and really fun, and make sure it's performing well," Muzyka told GamesIndustry.biz. "You have to build the infrastructure to support a certain size launch and we're also thinking really long term at Bioware EA for this, there's going to many many consumers coming to the game over time and we're going to be expanding it out. We want to make sure that the service is really high quality, that's the commitment we have to the launch of The Old Republic."

This has people interpreting it as Bioware will limit the number of people allowed to play and access the game at launch in order to ensure a successful launch experience. Let panic ensue as gamers worry that they might be part of the ones not allowed to play!

So in comes Reid to do what he does best and clear it all up for us:

“Shacknews apparently got confused, and they're confusing you, so allow me to clarify. Nothing has actually changed since we announced pre-order access in July.”
He says on the official forums. He then continues to explain:

“Everyone who pre-orders Star Wars: The Old Republic and redeems their pre-order code will get Early Game Access. Those who do this will be able to download the game client and play the game ahead of the release date.
While we aren't ready to talk about the exact timing of when Early Game Access starts (that depends on a number of factors including Game Testing and pre-order numbers), we'll announce that before the start date. Our planning accounts for allowing people to download the client before the Early Game Access start date, too.
However, when you actually gain admittance to Early Game Access will be determined in a first-come, first-served manner dependent on when you redeemed your pre-order code.”

BioWare have updated there Facebook page with a new Screenshot. This time it's an image from the planet Voss.

The Gormak, in their never-ending bid to dominate Voss, have built large complexes underneath the planet’s surface.

BioWare: 'We have an aggressive post-launch plan'

SWTOR fans have been asking “When will the game finally launch?” and now that this massive question has finally been answered, we see new questions creeping up in the minds of players everywhere. One thing that players want to know is what is going to happen post-launch. We already know how much is being put into launching a fantastic game but is it going to last? What happens next? How many other MMOs have we seen launch successfully but fall short post-launch?

In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, BioWare's Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk discussed their plans for the future of SWTOR and they definitely have a post-launch plan.

"We have a really aggressive plan post launch to build content and take the feedback to heart that we're getting from players and what they want for continued expansions, and use that feedback to build new content," Muzyka promised.

The plan sounds good and you can bet that SWTOR players are jazzed up to know that the team behind the game are promising more content for years to come. When a game costs as much as this one has to make, takes as long as TOR has taken and comes with such a hefty price tag to the player as well, you can bet that gamers are going to be expecting more from it than your average MMO.

Here’s hoping Star Wars: The old republic lives up to all the hype- and more!

Is SWTOR the Avatar of Gaming?

A lot has been said about SWTOR already and it’d be a great understatement to say the game will be good. Just how good it will be is still up for debate. The Daily Mail says it could be the video game version of James Cameron's billion-dollar blockbuster, “Avatar”. Wow! That’s a pretty big claim but SWTOR just might be the game to be able to live up to such prophecies.

The Daily Mail points out:

The game is among the most expensive ever made - rumoured to have cost games giant Electronic Arts more than £100 million. But it could 'earn billions' say game industry insiders - dwarfing even the amounts earned by cinema blockbusters such as Avatar. World of Warcraft has had up to 11 million monthly subscribers, earning the company a reported $500 million a year in subscription fees - on top of disc prices for the game and its four expansions. The game has been running since 2004.

All true facts and all good reasons why SWTOR could actually live up to a video game equivalent of “Avatar”.  It’s one of the most anticipated games in history. It has a massive budget invested into it- rumored at millions. If they get this game right, they stand to make billions from it and garner many impressed fans.

To pull off a feat such as this, however, a game will need to do things no other game has done before. Some believe that SWTOR will do this while others are still skeptical. What do you think?

BioWare Opens New Customer Service Center in Ireland

EA announced yesterday that they will be opening a new customer service center, this one in Ireland.

EA Senior Vice President Ray Muzyka spoke at the inaugural event in Galway, Ireland said, “MMO launches are complex, and we are determined to set a new standard for a high quality, stable, smooth launch for our fans. Our new BioWare facility and team in Galway is critical to ensuring we deliver on that goal. We’ve got a solid base of people here already in Galway . . . we’re looking for more. From Ireland . . . from the rest of Europe to support our German and French customers . . . from all over the world. We want you to join us here at BioWare Ireland.”

This will be a first for BioWare and it can mean big news for the company as well as for European gamers. This will be BioWare’s premier location outside of North America so a lot of important action can be done from this new facility. This could be the first big step for BioWare to make sure the launch of SWTOR is smooth both for North American players and those in Europe.

A video of the press conference with the Irish Prime Minister is posted on the official EA News page for you to view.

Prospective employees interested in employment opportunities at BioWare Ireland should visit: www.bioware.com/careers.

Eurogamer Expo Gains Attention thanks to SWTOR

Eurogamer Expo’s time has come, says Patrick Garratt and it is in part due to BioWare’s The Old Republic announcement yesterday. VG247 is a media partner of Eurogamer Expo, and is partially owned by Eurogamer Network. They had an interesting write-up on the Erogamer Expo and what SWTOR has done for it in recent days.

Sometimes all it takes is one popular topic to put an event on the map. This is especially true when it comes to entertainment and media. In the video game world, people, including media, are often drawn to what they know. They won’t always go out of their way to visit or report on expos, conventions or events until they are made “big business”. Sometimes an event just needs that one thing to come along to put them on the map.

And that’s exactly what SWTOR did for the Eurogamer Expo. As Patrick explains in this article, news of SWTOR release date announcement happening at the Expo would set a precedent for more announcements to be made at the show for years to come. You can bet that mainstream media will take this expo more seriously in the future and you will probably see attendance at future expos increase by quite a bit.

Eurogamer Expo was named as the announcement platform on the game’s official site. Since it is in only its fourth year of showings, this was a huge milestone that will definitely draw other companies to make their own announcements at future events. It also made many gamers who not aware of Eurogamer Expo familiar with the name.

This is just another example of how SWTOR is good for business.

Craig Morrison on SWTOR Launch and Success

Craig Morrison (Game director of Age of Conan) talks about the launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic on his blog and brings up some really good points about the potential success of SWTOR. His very thorough (long, but worth the full read) post brings up some very good points. He addresses different reasons why the game is showing early success, how it compares to the massive MMO hit from Blizzard and also, where it might go in the future.

A snippet:
The game will most likely sell extremely well out of the gate, almost certainly the most successful first month sales of any MMO ever, and probably by a wide margin...it will then possibly even retain over a million subscription customers (something it should be remembered no game other than World of Warcraft has managed)...truly massive numbers...unless the game somehow collapses it is going to post seriously impressive numbers...yet...you can already read many comments across the net which indicate that there is a sizable number of people who are referring to that as a potential 'failure'.

All valid points from a man with a lot of experience in the game industry. Morrison points out that for SWTOR to come up 2nd to WoW will not be considered a success by the masses and that while it would signify a great deal of success, most will still garner it a failure unless BioWare is able to beat WoW records with SWTOR. It really comes down to the big issue of what actually constitutes a successful game.

How would you define success in the MMORPG world?

The views of a gamer might vary from that of the game developers or even investors of the company backing the game. It’s tricky when we start dealing in matters of entertainment, along with a license as big as Star Wars, which so many people can relate to.

Morrison also talks about how much things have changed since 2004 when WoW released, what different tastes exist today, the wide variety that is available now as opposed to even just 5 years ago and many more valid points. It’s a good read with a different perspective that even SWTOR fans can respect.

Do you think SWTOR will be as successful as many are predicting?

Interview with Chris Collins

The guys over at www.swtor-europe.com did an  interview with Chris Collins  about European Community during Eurogamer Expo. It's great to see some info other then the release date coming out of the Eurogamer Expo, but I guess Chris Collins don't have much experience doing interviews, or he just weren't allowed to give out any new information.

With blessings from www.swtor-europe.com we are posting the full interview below, but joine the discussion on the article right here!

Hi Chris, thanks for taking some time to talk to us, I know it's very busy here today.
No problem, good to hear from stwor-europe, I like the site.

Now firstly I'd like to kick off with some questions that specifically concern the European fanbase, one of which is whether the Red Zone territories will have access to the game, or if they will be IP blocked. Any official word on this?
So, if you check on the FAQ, anything official is held within that.

I believe the FAQ states the territories it will be available in, or launched in, but nothing about IP blocking elsewhere...
That's all we can say at the moment

Ok, moving on then, the big announcement yesterday was the release dates, it's certainly made a lot of us very happy now that we have a clear date to look forward to. Will the 2 day difference between the US date and the EU date be reflected in the Pre-Order early access dates?
This is something that came up several times last night as well, but we aren't giving out any information on this just now. We might put something out in the future but not just yet, as you can imagine we're getting a lot of people asking about this.

I can imagine, not even a day since the release date announcement and everyone is moving on to pre-order release date speculation. It'll always be something!
That's exactly right.

So how about patches, can we expect a similar delay between US and EU updates?
I've said this quite a few times on the forums, we're creating a global service, which is why American players can play on the EU servers and visa-versa, and so as we are running a global service what we're looking to do is roll the patches out almost at the same time. Now, because of the timezones we're working in, we need to update the patches at a time where the minimum number of people will be interrupted so there will be a slight difference, a few hours is what we're aiming for. That's our target so, that's where we are, we'll see what happens at launch.

And can you say where the servers will be hosted?
No we aren't giving out that information.

Ok, so related to the global service you mentioned, I take it that any EU specific announcements will still be made via swtor.com and not a specific European method?
Again, yeah it's a global service so Americans and Europeans together. We have Antonio who's running the French community, Lars Mausrack who's very recently started running the German community... over the next few weeks you'll start seeing more and more new faces coming on from European community support as I do my job and hire a team... so you'll see more and more direct communication coming in directly to the European community, definately on the French and German side. The English players might not notice since they won't see much of the foreign language communication, but the team is definately there, it's a big team, we've got some great guys coming on board, and we're doing everything possible to support Euro players in every way we can.

Great thanks! So will there be European language split servers at launch, beyond the officially supported game languages?
So obviously English French and German are the languages we are currently planning on supporting for launch, I don't believe we've announced anything regarding other languages that our players will be speaking, Russian and Spanish for example, but it's definately something we've been considering, we'll hopefully get a message out there.

One of the problems with EU servers on other MMOs is that if no official language is set up for servers, then unnoficial ones are, which can harm other players engagement with that server...
Yeah definately, it's something we're aware of, the majority of people who are working on this project have worked on other games in the past and so are familiar with the issues. Again, also a lot of the feedback we're getting from the players is that thy want this sort of thing, so we'll see what we cando to accommodate them.

Great to hear, thanks for that, now onto some more general questions from our forums. Are there any features or mechanics you are aware of specfically for Role Players in the game?
Not that I can immediately think of off the top of my head... that doesn't nescessarily mean they aren't there or won't be there for launch; there might be something in the pipeline I'm not aware of.

Are you able to say how many flashpoints will be available at launch?
*shakes his head*

Ballpark figure?
Again, no sorry.

I'm guessing Operations are out of the question then?
Well... there's Eternity Vault.... for more news keep an eye out on swtor.com!

Is there anything else you can tell us that might not be out there as general knowledge at the moment?
Did you hear we announced the release date? 22nd of December 2011!

I... think I might have heard something like that somewhere yeah...
There's been a lot of concern from the European playerbase that we don't give Europe as much attention as the US, my hope is that by coming here to Eurogamer and having a show like this, and announcing one of the biggest pieces of news to hit The Old Republic it will show that we really place a lot of importance on the European community.

I agree fully, it definately seems like SWTOR has a lot going on here this weekend. The announcement yesterday kinda took everyone by surprise, after it was announced there was a brief pause where everyone was just completely shocked before they errupted in applause.
Yeah I've got some great shots of the press on the front row just as the announcements were made, and because they could see the camera they were, you know, kinda posing, but when the date was read out they completely forgot and were just all *waves his arms around in mock surprise*.

*laughs* yeah I think mine was something like that too. Well that rounds up my questions, thanks again for taking time to talk to us, great to hear from you, and thanks for helping organize such a great event.

Bioware: No Lifetime Subscription Option For Star Wars: The Old Republic

Now that we finally have a release date for SWTOR, many gamers are planning their playtime and devotion to the game. Some so much so that they are ready to pledge themselves to a lifetime subscription to the game or at least wondering if there will be an option to do so if they end up loving the game as much as they are predicting they will.

I enjoy following Stephen Reid, SWTOR’s Senior Community Manager on Twitter because he is always a wealth of information in a hilarious package. His snarky responses when people try to get snippy with him can be pretty funny, too. Ultimately it’s a great source to get your quick-hit SWTOR questions answered and you can learn a lot from the answers he gives to others as well.

On the topic of lifetime subscription options for SWTOR, Reid clarified that they do not have any plans at this time to offer a lifetime subscription option. So there you have it folks, sorry but no dice- at least not for now anyway.

Is this a bad move on their part? Would you buy one if the option was given?

Did EA Capitalize On the Diablo III Delay by Announcing the Release Date of Star Wars: The Old Republic?

The guys over at DualShockers.com had a really interesting theory on the announcement of SWTOR coming after the Diablo III delay. The piece they wrote on the day after the SWTOR announcement describes a possible connection between the news about Diablo III and the release date announcement:

“Yesterday Blizzard announced the delay of Diablo III to early 2012, today Electronic Arts announced the release date for Star Wars: The Old Republic for December the 20th, on a Saturday. Extremely convenient. Even a bit too convenient, maybe.”

I’m not usually the conspiracy theory type but it’s a pretty good point they make here with the linkage of the two announcements. Did EA/Bioware see this as their ideal time to jump on the announcement of the official release date?

Sounds like a good theory to me…

The article gives some pretty compelling ideas about why this theory might be true:

“Thirdly, by announcing a release date right after the disappointment caused by the Diablo III delay, EA stole Blizzard’s thunder in one stroke, getting many gamers that were anxiously awaiting for Diablo to look at Star Wars: The Old Republic as the perfect candidate to replace the rival in the holiday season.”

Again, all good points by Giuseppe Nelva. So what does Nelva decide to do after posting this masterpiece? Go straight to the horse’s mouth as the saying goes and ask SWTOR‘s Senior Community Manager Stephen Reid about the matter.

When asked how far from the truth the idea was he responded:
“About as far as it’s possible to get.”
And continued:
“Yep. The two had zero connection, but enjoy your conspiracy theory.:D”
ZING. Ouch…
He finally concluded:
“Call it a happy coincidence, because that’s really all it was.”

Haha! Good going, Giuseppe. We completely agree that even if it were true, he would never publicly admit it (or be authorized to do so) but kudos for bringing it to him and sharing the response with the rest of us. If you want to read the full article, plus the follow up with Reid’s response, head over to Dual Shockers and check it out for yourself.

Return of the Jedi STOLEN!

A blast from the past now, thanks to this clip from British TV news which details a shocking and frankly deplorable case of grand theft. One of the original copies of Return of the Jedi was snatched by cunning street urchin pirate types from a cinema in Hastings, despite ridiculously tight security measures. including having an old lady as the film's security chief. Shocking.

video

And people say piracy wasn't rife until people could mass circulate/share pirated goodies on the internet! All moral issues aside, this clip throws up one glorious question: just think, someone somewhere might well be sitting on an original, unedited version of the film. And it might just be the last one in existence.

Remember, kids, don't be a Video Pirate, or you might have someone like Helen "Crazy Eyes" Ganz on your case. And no-one wants that.

Intergalactic Intel: PvP

“OH MY GAWD.” My ear drums were being destroyed by my team mate.
“Dee, you need to stay calm and not panic we’ve go-”
“HE’S CHARGING ME!” I was interrupted and drowned out. “GET IT OFF ME!”
“DEE! Calm down!”
“ARGGHHAHHHHE’SKILLINGMEAGHAAAHHHH!”
“DANGLES SHUT UP!” The yelling ceased. “Interrupt his next cast and we’ll focus him. Dangles you’re fine I’m throwing heals on you the entire time.”

Player versus player, or PVP, is a popular form of game play in video games today. I personally have spent my week playing Team Death Match in Gears of War 3. Shooting everything that moves and giggling crazily. I always get asked why PvP in MMO’s? It’s very interesting journey that has much to do with the progression of MMO’s in general and me as a player.

When a player hits maximum level or very high level in MMO’s they begin something called, “End Game”. End Game is when players have finished leveling and are looking for something to occupy the time of their high level characters. Back in olden days the only form of End Game was PvP. It wasn’t until Everquest that the idea of players grouping together to defeat large monsters was introduced, also known as “Raiding”.

Now my first MMO was Runescape. The thought of PvP in Runescape horrified me. The idea of getting beaten and having your items stolen was not my idea of fun. When I progressed to Ragnarok online I got over the fear, probably because you didn’t lose items. In Ragnarok Online one of the best forms of end game was War of Emperium, a guild versus guild battle. Players would do combat in order to take castles. I feel in love with PvP. The killing players made me feel like I was Mel Gibson in Braveheart.

As I progressed to World of Warcaft, I started playing the game with the intention of being a PvPer once again. I picked a very powerful class at the time (Shadow Priest to be exact) and leveled up. By the time I hit max level my class was no longer the power house it used to be so I began trying something different and began playing as a healer in PvP. I created a team 5v5 team and one of our last matches together was what transpired above.

Now with The Old Republic hot on our heels, I am excited for both the PvE and PvP aspects of the game. Though I do believe I shall first invest in PvP. I mean this is a battle for the Galaxy, and as dangerous as a Rancor terrorizing a small town is, I do think my lightsaber is meant to be slashing through some Bounty Hunter.

So why should you PvP? A lot of players I meet in World of Warcraft are frightened of the idea of PvP. PvP can be fun. With a lot of screaming and giggling you and your friends can defiantly have as much fun as a match of Call of Duty...if that’s your thing. If not insert another multi-player game. The struggle between two teams playing a capture the flag or team death match is very rewarding if you win. While PvP can be extremely frustrating at first keep at it. Everyone started of bad and it simply takes time to become a better player. There are resources just like there are for PvE for PvP,

I’ll let you in on a little secret for PvP. Over all my years of PvPing the most important part of it is communication. A team of well communicated players can topple any other team even if their opponents have better equipment and more skill. Timing stuns and slows are important. Knowing when someone has used a cool down is almost more important than monitoring your own.

PvP isn’t for everyone, but those of you who are ready for The Old Republic’s PvP I will gladly fight beside you...or cut you down. Remember the game is only as fun as you allow it to be. Be nice, work with your team mates, communicate. I wish you all the luck on the Battlefield. May the Force be with you.

Totalbiscuit interviews Daniel Erickson

TotalBiscuit interviews the Lead Writer of  Star Wars: The Old Republic and multitalented Bioware veteran Daniel Erickson on how to tell a story in an MMO as well as information on the morality system of The Old Republic.

This is the first time we are seeing what biscuit looks like I believe. First I thought he was going to be the guy on the left before i played the video, but then I saw the tophat and I was like yep thats him.

The ending made me laugh a bit when Daniel Erickson said that the first chapter would take longer to complete than KOTOR. And there's 8 of them. Theres three chapters, eight trilogies Kind of misleading, but thats what he meant.

How SWTOR's release date happened.

Came across this little meme over at Reddit. While I'm not sure that this is how the decision on SWTOR release was made, i'm sure that there have been a nerve war going on between BioWare and Blizzard on these two games. But Deathwing Raid for WoW announced to be released on December 13th ITS A TRAP!

20th December in US / 22nd December in Europe - How is that a simultaneous release?

With all the buzz surrounding the big SWTOR news today – a release date- you can bet that there would also be some questions. The biggest question was actually asked before but left mostly unanswered.

Will Europe get it the same day or will there be delay between regions?

Georg Zoeller explained today,

Since I've seen some confusion about this::

The two day difference isn't our idea. The problem is that the game industry works around retail dates and retailers in the US restock their shelves on Tuesdays while in the EU it's Thursday.

So sorry my European friends, I totally feel for you and still remember those problems from back when I still lived in Germany.

So yes, Europe will have to wait almost 2 extra days for the release and this is still technically considered a simultaneous release.

If you still have not preordered a copy, you will want to get on that or run the risk of missing out at least on the initial launch. To help ensure a smoother launch experience, Bioware is limiting the initial numbers of copies to be sold so you may not want to wait until December 20th to get your copy.
The retail copy will include 30 days of subscription time, with further pricing as follows:
  • 1 Month Subscription: $14.99 (£8.99/€12.99)
  • 3 Month Subscription: $13.99 per month (one-time charge of $41.97/£25.17/€35.97)
  • 6 Month Subscription: $12.99 per month (one-time charge of $77.94/£46.14/€65.94)

SWTOR Release Date Is Here!

“This is no Jedi mind trick. The most heavily anticipated MMO to date will launch on 12.20.2011.”

It's official! The release date for Star Wars: The Old Republic has now been released. You may have gotten the email but if you didn’t, the news is spreading quickly all over the Internet and gaming communities. Stephen Reid hinted at it yesterday on Twitter, for those who caught it. When the Fan Republic asked, “Will Bioware be "Refining" the RD window as promised at CC?” Reid answered with, “I think we'll go straight to a date.”

We’re digging on that for sure!

If you have already pre-ordered the game, you will probably also see the change on your preorder status already. You may have received the email stating that the status of your order has changed. If not, it’s coming soon.

The new release date is 12/20/11 – that’s just in time for Christmas but you don’t want to wait for Santa to bring this game to your door or you’re guaranteed to miss out, at least on the initial launch. Bioware has already announced there will be limited copies available on initial release so waiting too long might mean you are sitting out while others are enjoying the launch.

With the release date revealed, pre-order quantities will go fast. If you haven't already, make sure to pre-order* now and secure your Early Game Access and exclusive in-game bonus item.

Do you have your copy secured yet?

Learn More about SWTOR Companion Characters

Exciting news from the Developer Blog today- it’s time to learn more about companion characters. As we get closer and closer to the eventual launch of SWTOR, we learn more and more about different aspects of the game. Today’s update is all about the companion characters, something that many players have been asking questions about. This thorough blog post tells you just about everything you need to know about companion characters.

Each character class unlocks unique companions throughout their storyline; companions that fight alongside players in battle against AI and other players in Open World PvP, aid in crafting and non-combat missions through Crew Skills, and provide commentary on environments and engage in conversations.

The update goes on to tell us more about what we can expect from our companion characters. It’s the first of two blogs devoted to the topic and it’s pretty thorough covering info such as customization, companion classes, and more.

There are even three videos to show you exactly what the post is talking about. Senior Game Designer, William Wallace, explains the hurdles the dev team have to go through to make the companion characters.

Some concerns:

  • How do you make each player’s companions unique in a world where other people are experiencing the same story with the same companions?
  • How do you make companions a critical part of the player’s combat without stepping on the usefulness of other players?
  • How can you make a companion character that is easy to control for players who don’t want to micromanage abilities, while also offering complex options for players who enjoy that style of gameplay?
Check out the full post for yourself and let us know what you think. We’ll be sure to fill you in when the second part goes out!

Friday Update? Companion Update video

This Friday update is not yet up, but yesterday Gamespot posted Developer Dispatch Video featuring the Bioware team going into some more detail on the companion system. Some of the details include changing a companions combat behaviour, tweaking appearance, and unlocking new story lines and companion quests through gaining their affection.

SWTOR will Have Two Panels At NYCC’11

Star Wars: The Old Republic is big news. Even if you’re not a Star Wars fan, a Bioware fan or anyone looking forward to the game’s release, chances are high that you have at least heard about it. If you want to learn more about SWTOR, the upcoming New York Comic Con might be the place to do it.

SWTOR is popular enough that there will be two separate panels devoted to it at NYCC 2011. One is a main panel which can be seen here and the other is a Q&A panel with MMORPG.com which can be seen here but there is not currently a lot of info on what will be at these panels. Both will happen on Friday- main pane at 2:30pm and Q&A at 6:30pm.

That’s about all the info we have so far but we will keep our eyes and ears open for any new info. We’ll be sure to update you with anything new we learn about these panels and what info might be released at them. If you plan to attend yourself, make sure you check them out and tell us about it.

Investing In EA Could Be a Great Choice Right Now

There is good news for those who hold stock in EA and also for anyone considering investing in the company now. Many experts believe the benefits outweigh the risks to investing in Electronic Arts with big titles like SWTOR on the way.

Seeking Alpha reports:

Electronic Arts (ERTS) is on the verge of releasing potentially one of the best selling games of the year and possibly the decade. While there is no official release date set, Electronic Arts through its BioWare division has stated during their Q1 2012 Conference Call that it's targeting the 2011 holiday season to release its upcoming massively multiplayer online role playing game [MMORPG] Star Wars: The Old Republic.
You don’t even have to like video games to realize that this is a big move and that the stakes and the payouts could be high for getting in with the company now.

The reasons this article gives for investing in EA all revolve around the projected success of SWTOR. Reasons include:

  • Record-breaking pre order sales
  • Estimated 3 million unites projected to sell
  • Recurring subscriptions to bring in more revenue
In the conclusions the analyst states, “During this first year, if EA reports a significant revenue increase, that could translate into a significant gain in its stock’s share price. Granted, there are no guarantees, but at this point, it appears that the reward outweighs the risk.”

Most will agree that things are looking very good for EA and their shareholders. Should SWTOR turn out to be a big fat flop, it would certainly affect more than just the gamers who are waiting to play it.

Eurogamer Expo Opening Video, Screenshots and More

If you’re getting excited about the Eurogamer Expo, you are not alone. More and more info is starting to be released as the weekend gets underway, including the opening video

BioWare’s Stephen Reid (@Rockjaw) has tweeted several Star Wars: The Old Republic-related pictures from day one of the Eurogamer Expo, which are some of the first pics to come out from the event. In typical Reid fashion, they are a lot of fun.

The Guild Sphere: The Greek Lords

Normally I think of beautiful sunny islands when someone mentions Greece. Other people will properly think about the huge economic crises the country is going through. But today we will be talking SWTOR, as the Greek sith guild "The Greek Lords" took the time to answer our questions.

Where did your guilds name come from?
From our country and and because we are on the empire side

Can you give me a quick 2-3 sentance description of your guild?
Our guild is a interested on PvP , Operations , flashpoints on questing and helping each other on crafting so we can get usfull items a lot quicker. Plus when we get about 88 members we will make a schedule on how we will help each other on craftin by meanig that each member will use on of hes companions for online on crafting and helping the guild . We ar developing and our guild web (for more info on the crafting schedule sent my a private message on my swtor account )

How did your guild come about?
it would be more easy for my and me teammates to develop crafting and operation, flashpoints and PvP battles.

What kind of play style do you focus on? PvE, PvP, RP:
PvP most we are not interested o the rest for the minute but on game launch this may change

How serious do you play and/or run the guild?
Very serious because if the leader isn't serious the rest members they will do selfish things by mine opinion

Do you have ranks or a certain hierarchy in your guild?
Yes we do but for the minute we dont have but we will have on the guild web the reason that we have is for the members to make them more in to game

Why did you choose the Republic / the sith empire?
The big reason is that i find the empire more cool

Why do you run a guild?
First i don't run it my self the other 2 members are leaders as swell . the reason that we run it and we don't join because on some guilds we joined there was not democratic it was what the leader said

How do you approach Raid Planning?
Depends for each raid we will have different strategies . 1 thing will be the same allways that we will have 2/4 DPS players , 1/4 Healers players and 1/4 Tanks or some times 1/4 DPS, 1/4 Healers and 2/4 Tanks

Are you always open for new recruits or do you want to keep a certain guild size?
Under 32 but if more than 48 we will split the guild to 3 guild and become allies . and if between we will stay 1 guild

Age Requirement?
12+ if 12- he will have to pass a test that he will be given be him 1 from the 3 leaders

Guild size?
Hopefully many

What makes your guild stand out from everyone else? What makes your guild unique?
that we will do scheduled do flashpoint operation and PvP that all members most communicate each other we will make 4 man squads that we strategies and that we help each other what the cost

How do you spend your time until release? Do you know each other in real life or do you spend a lot of time on forums?
on forum bassicly the only member i now in real person jabba sett

What Other Games are you currently playing as a guild?
non

If somebody is interested now how and where can they apply for membership?
On our swtor guild page plus when our web is ready on our guild web

One last question, if there was one thing you could ask the Dev's to include, what would it be?
whould it be able to change our side from the empire to republic our the oppesite
