SWTOR as eSport – Can It Happen?

So this is not the first time this question has been proposed but we want to open it up for a bit of discussion here. Could SWTOR make it as an eSport? With the growing popularity and demand on esports, it doesn’t seem far-fetched to think about other games getting into the scene. But is SWTOR a good choice? What aspects of SWTOR could be made into an eSport? We’d clearly be looking at PvP options, right? There is a sect of players who love SWTOR solely for the PvP side, despite this not being what the game is specifically made for and branded to. There will always be players who love PvP and want to get specifically into that style of play. So with that in mind, let’s take a look at what might work for SWTOR in an eSports environment. SWTOR PvP tournaments played out on Twitch? This…

As of right now, Game Update 3.1 is planned to go live in about a month (and is already on PTS, so please check it out!). However, as always, this is subject to change. After the end of Season 4, we would normally have a Pre-Season lasting a few weeks to a few months. However, for Season 5 there will be no Pre-Season – we will go straight from Season 4 to Season 5. We decided to nix the Pre-Season because there will…

An Update on The Furious Title

Due to complaints on the official forums, BioWare will be changing the Furious PvP title from Season 3 ranked PvP to Fairly Furious Read the full update here or below: Hey folks! I wanted to tell you about a change coming to one of your titles, the Furious. As many of you pointed out, this title already existed in game prior to the end of Season 3 rewards. We really apologize for this happening, it was an unfortunate oversight on our part that it got through and we want to correct that oversight. As of 3.0.2 anyone who currently has The Furious from Season 3 will have it replaced by Fairly Furious. If you still want to have The Furious title, you can just jump on over to Makeb and defeat the Golden fury to earn it. Now, one thing we also know with Season 3, is that some of you…

PvP Season 3 rewards announced!

Biowares’s assistant designer Alex Modny took it to the official forums today to announce the rewards for PVP season 3. Judging by the reaction, most SWToR fans were rather pleased by the announcement and the improvement over Season 2. In specific: The culmination of Season 3 is fast approaching and many furious rumbles have yet to be waged. The end of Season 3 will come with Game Update 3.0 and your rating, when the servers come down for the update, will determine which tier you are in and what rewards you receive. The higher your tier the more glorious your rewards! Just like in previous seasons, the Highest Earned rating that determines the tier you are in – not Current – so no need to feel like you are risking Rating by going after the next tier up! To see your Highest Earned Rating, check the Warzone Rating and Stats…

When Will SWTOR See New PvP Content?

We have heard a lot of talk about SWTOR and the new content coming out recently. Fans are hyped up about all the good stuff coming with 3.0 but one player on the forums asked something that I was also thinking: Can we expect to see any PvP content or news any time soon. While SWTOR isn’t marketed as a PvP game, it does still have those elements to it and some players really like it so it would be great to see Bioware do a little more in this area to keep things fun and interesting. Community Manager Eric Musco had this to say in response on the forums: Hey Jaiyne, Good question, let me take a stab at this one. If you are asking specifically for news about new content, such as a Warzone or Arena map, then the answers is unfortunately no. There are no new maps,…

Have an idea for a Warzone? Share it with a Dev!

The developers over at BioWare are asking for player input for upcoming warzones.  The idea is awesome, and I love the fact that the dev’s want player input for these kinds of things. I still have the feeling that we came up with the huttball idea back in the days, and it will be interesting to see what other creative ideas the player community can come up with. Personally I’d love to see warzones along the size and scope of Isle of Conquest or Alterac Valley in World of Warcraft. Something that combines node capture with destructible barriers or NPCs to fight would add some nice variety. You have any ideas for a cool warzone? Let us know in the comments. Below are the official forum posts: Post #1 AlexModny Have an idea for a Warzone? Share it with a Dev! | 03.31.2014, 02:11 PM Hello Warzone Aficionados! We are starting…

Frequently Asked PvP Questions

Eric Musco and PvP Designer Alex Modny will be on Twitch later today, playing Warzones on Prophecy of the Five at 1:30PM PDT. As with most of the BioWare streams, they get quite a few questions which are commonly asked by PvPers. Therefor Eric talked with the combat team about many of our questions and got answers to many of the commonly asked questions. Below you will find those questions/answers. Will we ever be able to choose a specific Warzone to queue for? From the design side, we do like the idea of allowing our players to be able to impact which Warzone they want to queue for, but it is not as simple as letting everyone select which Warzone they want and call it a day. Because of a few reasons (queue population, preventing ‘de facto’ best Warzone, making sure all Warzones are being played, etc.) it would require…

Does the Bolster System Need Fixing?

A lot of SWTOR players are saying the bolster system is broken. Is it really? Let’s take a look at the topic.  First, bolster was believed to be a friend of the new PVPer but now that it’s out, many are questioning whether or not this feature is really a positive. While bolster was meant to bring a more even playing field to the PvP aspects of SWTOR, many players feel like it has succeeded only in bring more problems. Some players don’t believe it has leveled the playing field at all. So the idea behind Bolster is a good one- it’s intended introduce and level the playing field in PvP of SWTOR. It could also be a good way to introduce new players to this aspect of the game and its content. And some will say that level 10-54, Bolster is working as intended. But what happens at level…

Developer Update: Quesh Huttball Pit

SWTOR Associate Designer, Alex Modny posted a Developer Update regarding Quesh Huttball Pit today. The blog post was followed up by a forum post were he talks about player concerns regarding the map. People that have played the map once on the Public Test Server, says it is hard to play but a pretty fun map. There are a lot of places to get lost in, but it seems like that whoever can keep a slinger/sniper on the ball spawn will win most of the time. Alex Modney’s reply to this is below the blog post: Developer Update: Quesh Huttball Pit The most brutal game in the Galaxy is back! The magnanimous Giradda the Hutt has graciously opened up his latest Huttball Pit on the noxious planet Quesh and is currently looking for deaths participants to entertain him! The new Pit, built especially for Giradda, is a different layout than…

Ranked PvP Rating Requires Minimum 10 Matches to Count for Rewards

Following the last few days debate regarding end Season 1 Rewards, Eric Musco updated the community about am issue with the game. Currently, it is possible that your name can show up on the leaderboards with a rating, even if you have technically not yet earned one. Below is the announcement: Announcing End Season 1 Rewards | 02.20.2014, 11:44 AM Hey everyone, I wanted to let you know of an issue I just learned of. Currently, it is possible that your name can show up on the leaderboards with a rating, even if you have technically not yet earned one. The rules that determine you having a rating are fairly simple but I want to make sure I spell them out so that we don’t have a situation where someone is expecting a reward and does not receive one. In order to earn a rating, you must: Have played 10 games…

Bolstered Mods vs. Obroan

Tait Watson have been active on the official forums regarding Bolstered mods. Bolster was designed to replace Recruit gear because lets face it… Recruit gear sucked. It sucked for the people wearing it and it sucked for the people on their team because they were essentially a free kill. The best fix for Bolster imo is to remove it completely from 55 Warzones. Bam, PvP gear instantly is BiS. But what about the fresh 55? Right now Obroan (67) is the top tier of PvP gear, and Conqueror (65) is second. Add a third tier by bringing back Partisan (63), and have it cost 1 credit. Let people min/max Partisan as the “introductory” gear. Full min/max Partisan with augments will put you around 28k hp. Full min/max Conqueror will put you around 30k hp. Full min/max Obroan with augments will put you around 31.5k. Genuine gear progression without being as…

Bolstering and You: A letter from the Combat team

Tait Watson got the Combat team to write an in-depth explanation of the Bolster system. I’m raelly starting to like this bird. You can read the whole thing in it original here, or our copy paste below. If you ask me, bolster still a bit broken, its still way better then the recruit gear system they previously had, Personally I would like to see it in a place where people that did end game pve could use that gear for pvp and have it be perfectly viable. The fact that a set of 66 blue’s are better for pvp then full dreadguard is lame. Hey gang! I know a number of people have been waiting on a post about some more specifics on how bolster works and interacts with items and the regular stat system, so I thought I would try to bring a little light to what is one of…

The name of the PvP Enhancement is on the left, with columns for: Endurance Power Critical Surge Accuracy Absorb Defense Shield Alacrity Expertise If you’re tired of scrolling around so much trying to figure out which stats go with which enhancement, you can use this chart to help you find out quickly. Problems with Arena Matchmaking

If you’ve spent any time trying solo arenas, you may have seen that most often the teams don’t come out very evenly matched, despite claims that they should be. It reminds me of early arenas in WoW, where the dominant teams would match up against newbie teams and it was a massive steamroll. Honestly, it’s just not fun to play like this and it discourages players from wanting to sign up for arenas. Some of the matches in SWTOR arenas just don’t make a lot of sense. Above is one example of such a game, but it happens a lot. And when repeated games give you a matchup where one team is clearly dominant over the other and there isn’t even a fair chance, it just isn’t fun anymore. What’s the point of signing up? There are some clear class composition issues as well as ranking issues. When one team has an…

TOR TV: Scoundrel PvP Montage

This is Kalamitis third installment of Scoundrel PvP Montage. Scoundrel PvP is extremely fun and I’m surprised that people are overlooking and don’t pick it up. I asked him why he use back blast way too early after shoot first, and he answered: Good catch! When I’m playing PvE, I use exactly that rotation. While I’m 1v1 during warzones, most of the other classes outsustain me, either because of tankiness (for example a Juggernaut) or because of them having a lot of CC and healing (Sorcerer). That means, I have to burst them down during my stun lock and before they have the chance to fight me back. When I reopen the fight after I have used dissapearing act, I want to finish my opponent, I use Shoot First followed by Back Blast, for a quick 6-9k damage. Also, on PvP it’s not easy to get behind them (they don’t…

Huttball for Dummies

This strat helps you to control mid the whole time, while scoring like a champ. Anyone who can aoe stun STAYS mid (guard/juggs, mara/sents, guns/ops/sco/snip) Only one Shadow places phasewalk on A (top platform enemy side) and remains stealth. Anyone (prefer… a tank) gets the ball at B1, crosses the acid UNTIL B2. Pass to the shadow on top, and moves back to middle, repeat. Shadow breaks stealth to get the ball, use resilience before getting the ball (not to get pulled or thrown) and force speed to endzone. Repeat. Heres a screenshot Phasewalk helps you to get in place to receive the ball if you get throw/pulled etc, dont use it when you have the ball or you will reset it.  Whenever the other team gets the ball and goes close/above A (on your side) just tell your whole team to go back mid, and do as stated. Discussion: Improving SWTOR PvP

PvP in SWTOR has long been a controversial topic. There are some who love it, there are some who hate it and everything in between. A recent post in the forums talked about how to improve PvP and it was written by a self-confessed old WoW PvPer. As someone who has also played hardcore World of Warcraft PvP, I can see a lot of their points as valid. However, SWTOR is a different game and I try to avoid any comparisons between two different games since it’s really different playing fields here. It’s apples and oranges- so comparing WoW PvP to SWTOR PvP just doesn’t stack up for me. However… there are some things that you can learn from doing PvP in another MMORPG, such as WoW that you can take with you into new games that you play like SWTOR. So with the spirit of that in mind, let’s…

Developer Blogs: PvP Season One Blog

Senior System Designer Rob Hinkle posted a blog regarding the upcoming season 1 of ranked warzones. The blog post doesn’t contain  a ton of new info, but it’s nice to see the 6 month timeframe officially stated.
